REDISCOVER MARTINSVILLE          More Than You Expect!  Martinsville, Indiana

Rediscover Historic Martinsville Apple Fest Review

By Dennis E. Champlin, Gosport News

Rediscover Historic Martinsville began another tradition Saturday afternoon, September 19, 2009, with their first annual “Apple Fest”.  What a beautiful day; we danced the afternoon and evening away!
It all got started with Western Square Dancing at 4pm.  Caller George Wiseman is quite good at making people want to join the fun; even Martinsville’s own Mayor Phil Deckard was out in a square doing the “Do Se Do” and “Promenade”.  Later on in the evening Mayor Deckard was sighted doing the “Twist” and sharing the fun.

Ballroom and swing dancing was presented by Jim and Susan Pennington.  Susan’s partner for the evening was WCBK Radio’s John Taylor.  They were quite the hit, and the three of them got all ages up and dancing, even doing the infamous chicken dance.  Winding up this evening of generation-crossing fun was Mike Cook as DJ with help from Elite Dance Studio doing Contemporary Hip Hop.

In order to keep everyone’s energy level high there was AWESOME Chili and Ham and Beans made by Jackie Blackwell of Blackwell Antiquities and Gifts, INCREDIBLE Cinnamon Rolls made by Eric and Elaine Hooker of Eric Is Baking, (you can order by the dozen at 765-342-5824), and the Davis Family Elephant Ear Wagon.  For the more health conscious, Gregory’s Orchard provided fantastic fresh fruit.

There was a “Guess the Number of Apples in the Bushel” for kids 15 and under, and the winner was Billy Lowhorn Jr., 4 year-old son of Sara and William Lowhorn.  Billy won a gift card from Krypton Comics to redeem at their new location on East Morgan St.

Another crowd pleaser was the “Peoples Choice Apple Dessert Contest”.  The winners were only separated by one vote!  First place winner was Agnes Badger of the Martinsville Candy Kitchen, with her Fresh Apple Cake, and Second place winner goes to Melanie Perkon of Antiques on Main for her Apple Pie.  A BIG thank you to all who entered a dessert, and to all who donated $2 to taste and cast their vote not knowing who made what.  The winners won “Rediscover Bucks”, which they can redeem at any participating location. Food, Friends, Family and most of all FUN were had by all!  Glad to have seen you there, on the square!
