Public Input Wanted for Downtown Revitalization Plan

The City of Martinsville has recently been awarded a $50,000 Community Focus Fund grant to prepare a plan for the revitalization of the downtown area. The plan will include three parts:  landscape analysis and improvements, building repairs and facelifts, and a retail and marketing study. Sponsoring partners for this project are Rediscover Historic Martinsville, Greater Martinsville Chamber of Commerce, Morgan County, Morgan County Historic Preservation Society, and the Reporter-Times.

Do you have an opinion about what downtown could or should be? Are there businesses that you would like to be able to shop at or eat at? Do you have ideas about sprucing up the square with flowers and other plantings?

It’s time to speak up! What you have to say is important.

Everyone is invited to take part in a public discussion and information gathering session on Monday, February 22 at 6:00 p.m. at Art Sanctuary, the former Methodist Church at the corner of Sycamore and Pike Street in Martinsville.

The professional consulting team assembled by Odle McGuire Shook Corporation, under the direction of Martinsville resident Ben Rawlins, will be there to discuss buildings, signs, parking, flowers, shopping, how to get in and out of downtown from the highways, developing an image to market downtown, and public policy—in short, anything and everything related to improving downtown.

If you have something to say, say it! Downtown Martinsville depends on you. Downtown Martinsville matters. Come see why.

For more information, contact Sharyn Kersey in the office of the Mayor 349-4928 or call Joanne Stuttgen at 349-1537.

Are you tired of seeing the weed-infested gravel plots on the corner of the courthouse square? Then you’ll be happy to know there is a plan to convert them to colorful, hardy perennial beds. Rediscover Martinsville is joining with the City and County and other partners to apply for a grant do just that!

We are looking for organizations who are interested in participating in an Adopt-a-Plot program for ongoing maintenance of the flower beds. Next May, participants will take a workshop with the Master Gardeners to learn how to plant and care for these beds during the long hot summer. Bi-weekly weed-pulling and dead-heading will be necessary to keep the corners looking great. In exchange for your help, your organization will receive a sign on your adopted corner promoting your involvement and inviting new members to join.

If you or your organization would like to learn more, or if you are ready to commit to the project right now, contact Rediscover Martinsville board member Joanne Stuttgen at (765) 349-1537 or jstuttgen@comcast.net.
